What others say about Devonport Aikido

Kingi Gilbert

This is my 4th martial arts experience, the philosophy of Aikido and family nature of the Devonport Aikido dojo is extremely warm and welcoming. The tutors are technically specific.  The team at Devonport Aikido demonstrate a sense of enlightenment that you would expect to find at the higher levels of martial art training.

My boys love Aikido.  From the first moment they hit the mat they were hooked.  Andrew is an amazing teacher with just the right amount of discipline and fun to keep the boys engaged and on track to become the most honourable of warriors.  My little girl can’t wait to start too and I must admit from a self defence standpoint Aikido can’t be beaten.  I can’t recommend Devonport Aikido enough.

“I would recommend Devonport Aikido. Andrew is a wonderful teacher, who totally engages the children and has the balance between learning and fun absolutely right. My nine year old son loves the discipline of Aikido, that it requires good concentration, while also developing the core physical strength that you need to become a warrior.”

About Us

Kia ora and Welcome!

I began my Aikido training more than 20 years ago and it has been a wonderful, challenging and rewarding journey thus far.

As a father, I have watched with concern the increase of cyber and physical bullying and its normalization on social media platforms like Facebook and Youtube, particularly among girls. I have always wanted my daughter to have the confidence, discipline and security that come from learning Aikido and had hoped that she would have these attributes before she reached her teenage years.

I was determined to develop my daughter’s toolbox of skills to help her cope in our modern society and with no convenient dojo for her to learn Aikido, the solution became increasingly obvious…open a dojo here in Devonport.

So here we are.

Our focus is on developing healthy, strong and well-balanced individuals within this community.

Although this started with my daughter and we love teaching children’s Aikido, I am passionate about the benefits of Aikido for adults in the modern world too. The physicality, centered-ness, calm and clarity that come from developing your mind and body together are the perfect tonic for executive stress and the pressures of adult life in the big city.

My journey with Aikido enters a new phase with the opening of this dojo and although it adds complexity to an already busy life, I look forward to the opportunity of sharing this wonderful art and its many benefits, with the children and adults from the Devonport and North Shore communities.

Our doors are open to you. See you on the mat…

What is Aikido?

Aikido 合気道 is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba.  It synthesized his life’s martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs.

Aikido is often translated as “the Way of unifying (with) life energy” or as “the Way of harmonious spirit.”  Ueshiba’s goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves, while also protecting their attacker from injury.

Aikido is non-aggressive and a very effective martial art. To accomplish this Aikido is performed by blending with the movement of the attacker.

Aikido requires very little physical strength, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) “leads” the attacker’s momentum using entering and turning movements. These techniques are used to redirect the attacking force back onto the attacker, using throws, pinning techniques and joint locks.
